Symmetric Crypto

Encrypt a file quickly and securely

First, ensure your symmetric keys are NOT being cached locally by adding the following lines to your gpg-agent.conf and reloading gpg-agent:

$ cat << EOF > ~/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf
default-cache-ttl 1
max-cache-ttl 1

$ echo RELOADAGENT | gpg-connect-agent

Then encrypt your file (you will be prompted for a password):

gpg --output filename.enc --symmetric --cipher-algo AES256 filename.ext

To decrypt:

gpg --output filename.dec.ext --decrypt filename.enc
